"Freddie Adkins will forever be a name known to me. Our meeting was pure accident and quite controversial. The lad wasn't our original choice for an assistant director, he was an 'unknown' to this industry. I give him quite the credit though, he kept nagging at my agent to look at his paperwork. It was tedious having to delete voice mails, e-mails and other spam from him. The position was filled by my friend Tom Greene, but two weeks prior to our filming day Tom had a family emergency. I was terrified for what was going to become of this film. The press were nosy and I couldn't think with the constant media attention. I was sitting in my office when I came upon Freddie's file. Although the boy hadn't produced much he had been apart of some other productions, small parts might I add, and he had potential. I rang Freddie up that night and asked if he could catch a plane to London as soon as possible. Freddie then informed me that he was on holiday with his friends and was staying in Oxford. We agreed to meet in the middle of our two cities and had a private lunch. I confronted him about his lack of experience but five minutes later I handed him the job. From then on, Freddie was a hard worker and was often the last one leaving the sets. The man has got some talent, I hope one day he will be able to find his place in this industry." - Simon Curtis So I've been living in New York City since I was eighteen years old. Before the city life, I was living in a small town outside of Nottingham. It was tradition for the Adkins boys' to follow in the pursuit of their father. However, my father passed away after the birth of my youngest sister. I'm the only boy in the family and when I was sixteen years old I left school to help provide for my mum and the girls. My mum could tell I was miserable, I hated working in our local bakery and making the minimum amount of the money a month. One of my favorite memories of my mum was for my tenth birthday she surprised me with a Polaroid camera. It wasn't much but it was everything that I wanted, she knew about my aspiring film maker dreams. Although I never did much complaining the entire family could tell I wasn't happy. My seventeenth birthday I saved up all of my earnings for the year and treated myself to a high definition camera and recorder. Six months later, I sent one of my sample pieces to New York University. Not even three weeks later I was contacted by the admissions department. My plan of schooling was to work a semester, study a semester. My total earnings would be counted for part of my tuition. Two months after my eighteenth birthday I flew to New York to pursue my dreams. Every night I would talk to my mum on the phone and listen to her cry. Sometimes I would get homesick but I knew that I had to achieve my dream. Millions of lads like myself had applied for this outstanding film school and I had been chosen. There was no way that I could let this slide through my fingertips. My time was consumed with course work, food, and sometimes a casual with my beer buds. Films were still my priority but occasionally I let a young woman wink at me. I was never a charming bloke, but my mum taught me all about manners and how to treat a lady. NYU was a fabulous school, they prepped me for everything. Fake sets, fake meetings and when graduation came I didn't want to leave my save environment. The tough years came after graduation, I had no job, no source of income. I was forced to go back to England and help my family out. In my spare time however, I kept up with directors and did some side work for unknowns. My Week With Marilyn was my debut even if the part was so small. We filmed in London and then after filming I decided to give New York another chance. Currently, I'm working with Cameron Crowe after an excellent review from Simon Curtis. I couldn't be in a better place right now.
