TEN HOW’S:HOW DID YOU GET ONE OF YOUR SCARS?This one time I was over my friend’s house and her brother was into skateboarding. Anyway somehow I decided that I should try it and I skated downhill! It was really fast so I thought to jump off in the grass where I cut my knee so bad from the grass blades and the friction. Worst pain ever! HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE YOUR LAST BIRTHDAY?Last year I went to Las Vegas for the weekend and just spent the entire time clubbing. I had so much fun at 1 OAK—we turned all the way up and the energy was fantastic. I think that I was wasted the entire weekend. HOW ARE YOU FEELING AT THIS MOMENT?Right now I feel pretty good. I’m a little bored though and I think that I need more on my iPod… I’m trying to relax though because last week at my job I got the worst migraine! I don’t usually get headaches so that was the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. The next day I felt the aftershocks and I’ve been drinking water and staying calm ever since. HOW DID YOUR NIGHT GO LAST NIGHT?Last night I spent the entire time at the office. Usually, I get off at six but I had to stay behind because the stupid interns left a mess in the intern room! I wasn’t forced to stay but I know how Ed is and I couldn’t take hearing him scream at us for hours today. The life of a PR girl never seems to be calm or quiet. HOW DID YOU DO IN HIGH SCHOOL/COLLEGE?At Spence I was a pretty normal student, I graduated with a 3.2 GPA. I think that once I went to Yale shit got intense but I worked my ass off there. I ended up graduating with a 3.6—not the best but to say I graduated a little early I think that I did pretty well. HOW DID YOU GET THE OUTFIT YOU'RE CURRENTLY WEARING?Seeing as how it’s a little lonely around here, I just have on this cute silk cami and short set that I bought from Victoria’s Secret. I’m not much of a Victoria’s Secret kind of girl but I couldn’t help but go in and buy these pajamas. It’s almost as if I’m not wearing anything… HOW OFTEN DO YOU SEE YOUR BEST FRIEND?I usually try to spend time with my very best friends every weekend. We’re all kind of busy doing our own things but because of our circles being small and running to each other at Manhattan events I see them almost every day. HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU SPEND IN A MONTH?Damn. I don’t even think I want to know. I love to shop and the mortgage on my townhouse isn’t cheap…even though that’s my parents’ money paying for that I still take that into account. HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR COFFEE?I usually order a Cinnamon Dolce Latte from Starbucks. HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR FUTURE?I want to live a really good life. By good I just mean I want to be happy and healthy. I know I’ll be financially stable but I just want someone to love and to make me feel young. I want to have children and lately I’ve been thinking about moving out of the city to somewhere in Maryland or Connecticut just because I loved Connecticut when I was in school and Maryland is so scenic. NINE WHAT'S:WHAT'S YOUR MIDDLE NAME?My middle name is Alexandria. I know it’s a little boring, I have no idea why my parents chose that for me but I think that it fits, maybe they though the same. WHAT DO YOU DO DURING THE SUMMER?During the summer in the past I would usually go to some random place. Sometimes I would feel romantic and want to go to some place in Europe and other times I feel sexy and want to go somewhere sunny and then other times I pick random exotic locations. My favorite place was Brazil but then it got too fucking crazy. Once I started working and going to college my summers are spent TRYING to relax. Then there’s always The Hamptons.. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITY IN A MAN?I think the most important quality in a man is respect. I think that if a man respects himself then he will respect those around him. If he has respect for you then it would prevent a lot of issues in marriage or relationships that just don't even have to be there.ing WHAT USUALLY MAKES YOU CRY?Ever since turning eighteen I can watch a movie and it’ll make me cry. I used to be sort of a hard ass. Just the other day Brother Bear came on, I haven’t seen it since I was younger and the part where he told the little bear that he killed his mom and when he turned back into a human made me shed a few tears. Anything that has to do with my family being hurt or losing someone I love is enough to make me cry. Also things that have to do with children and animals make me cry. WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER AFTER A HARD DAY AT WORK?Honestly…sex. I look at the therapeutic aspects and it does a lot. But a glass of wine will do. WHAT IS YOUR BEST QUALITY?I think that my best quality is my skin. My skin is very clear, I never really had skin conditions and my mother didn’t let me wear makeup in school. My whole body is just a nice copper tone and honestly it’s not the skin tone (even though I really love my skin tone) it’s the fact that I take good care of it. I have a glow and it looks healthy. WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE ABOUT YOURSELF?-sighs- I don’t like thinking of changing myself but I remember when I was younger I wanted larger breasts and a larger butt. My frame is petite which makes looking for clothes really easy but so many women in my family and other black women have big boobs and ass so I always feel out of place. I also hate that people think that I don’t eat when I eat everything in sight. WHAT TABOO HAVE YOU COMMITTED OR THOUGHT ABOUT?Wow I haven’t really thought about this let alone commit any but I think that I’d have a problem with the whole no alcoholic beverages while pregnant. I really like wine and champagne so that will be really interesting. but OMG I really don't even want to think about that. WHAT IS YOUR SPECIAL TALENT?My special talent is cooking. With my upbringing a lot of the women don’t cook shit but I’m just naturally good at it. I love cooking and it’s a way for me to do my own thing and be free. I’m also good at baking. I can literally make anything but the first time it may take direction but after that it will be bangin’. EIGHT HAVE YOU'S:HAVE YOU EVER SLEPT WITH SOMEONE WITH A GIRLFRIEND? HAVE YOU EVER CHEATED?Yeah I did sleep with someone with a girlfriend but it was a really messed up situation. I was talking to the guy and then I developed feelings for him. He was a bit of an ass and started dating some girl he introduced to his family but she ended up taking off for a semester and wanted to pick up where they left off. So yeah me and him still messed around and stuff behind her back. I loved that guy though. I’ve never cheated by sleeping with someone else on my boyfriend but I did kiss someone behind his back. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN BACK-STABBED BY A FRIEND?I grew up on the Upper East Side and went to an Ivy League school; of course I got back-stabbed by a friend. However, now they we are all adults I’ve moved on so if I see someone who has “back-stabbed” then I’m cordial with them. HAVE YOU EVER DATED SOMEONE OLD ENOUGH TO BE YOUR FATHER?He wasn’t technically old enough to be my father but he was up there in age. He was twelve years my senior and probably the most insecure and childish man I’ve ever encountered—ugh! HAVE YOU EVER READ AN ENTIRE BOOK IN A DAY?When I was at my house sick from school I ready Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in a whole day. I found myself being angry because I didn’t have any of the Harry Potter books at home so I had to wait until I felt better to go check out the Order of the Phoenix from the library. Then when the final book came out I read that one in a day. And I read The Scarlett Letter in a day for my eleventh grade year because we had this huge study guide to do and it was due the next day. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN OUT OF THE COUNTRY?Sure have! I’ve been to France, England, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Switzerland, Dubai, the Caribbean, Canada, Holland, Germany, Brazil, Italy, South Africa, Kenya and Mexico. My family loves traveling and sometimes I would go with my friends over the summer out of boredom. I think everyone should be able to travel out of the country; it makes you appreciate where you come from. HAVE YOU EVER HAD A ONE NIGHT STAND?I’ve had three… The first time happened when I was a freshman in college. I randomly met someone and then I slept with him…it was a bit careless. Then the second time happened my senior year when I came to New York for Christmas. I ended up sleeping with someone who I knew when I was in high school, he went to Collegiate. It was awkward because now I see him all the time. Then the last time was when I graduated with a really interesting guy in Italy. HAVE YOU EVER FALLEN IN PUBLIC?When I was in sixth grade I felt the need to go to the upper school. I wasn’t supposed to be there and I was in a hurry. I didn’t see that they had newly mopped the floor and I literally did a scissor kick in the air and fell right on my ass. It was so bad that no one really laughed at me, they were too busy concerned for my well-being. Then this other time when I was in the fourth grade I had on my mom’s heels and I was walking down the front steps of our building and bust my ass. The only person who saw me was the doorman but that was the worst. HAVE YOU EVER HAD SEX IN PUBLIC?Nope, I like my sex to be private. I’m not saying that I would never have sex in public but I just think that certain things you can keep to yourself and that would be one of them. SEVEN WHO'S:WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU SAID "I LOVE YOU" TO?You mean in a romantic way right? The last person I said that to was my ex-boyfriend Nathan who I dated during my matriculation at Yale. I thought I was going to marry that guy. He comes from a wealthy family out of Massachusetts and he was a really great guy. Things just sort of went south for us but he was my first real love. WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU TALKED ON THE PHONE TO?My mother, unfortunately. I’m kind of stuck in a situation. My mother wanted me to go to law school and be this big attorney or she wanted me to be more involved with society hosting. She was disappointed that I chose a writing major and she’s even more upset that I’m working at KCD, a PR firm. She figures I should either be a model or not work in the fashion industry at all which is so annoying. She called to drive me insane. WHO IS SOMEONE YOU CAN'T IMAGINE LIFE WITHOUT?I can’t imagine my life without my father…I love my mother very much even though she’s annoying as hell but I’ve always been a daddy’s girl. He gives me everything I want and he’s the reason I’m working in a professional world. He’s the strongest and hardest working man I know. He’s really ambitious but me and my sister seem to be his soft spot. I think every girl just ha a special place in their heart for their dad. WHO IS SOMEONE YOU LOVE BUT CAN'T HAVE?Wow… I’m not really sure on this one. I don’t develop strong feelings for people that easily so I only really feel that way about celebrities because the people I want are usually someone that I could get if I really tried. I don’t know if that sounds conceited or anything though… WHO IS A FEMALE CELEBRITY (DEAD OR ALIVE) YOU ADMIRE AND LOOK UP TO?This is a really good question. I have a wide variety of celebrities that I really admire who are female. I guess the first two would be the first ladies Michelle Obama and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. They’re both graceful women and are kind of ahead of their time. Michelle Obama didn’t come from vast amounts of wealth but with hard work she achieved her goal, Jackie is sort of this Jane Austen type character who was brought into a backwards world and she had to deal with that with her cheating husband, expectations, and the fact that her husband was murdered in front of her. Then there’s Oprah. Who doesn’t love her? We work in the same field, I studied journalism and I want to be just like her haha. WHO ARE YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE BOOK, FILM, AND TV CHARACTERS?My favorite book character is The Invisible Man from Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. I think it’s mostly because it’s my favorite novel. I love the Harlem Renaissance and Ralph Ellison is one of the greatest. My favorite television character would have to be Fran Fine from the nanny. She made me so obsessed with Queens and I'd bother all my friends from Queens so they could talk like her. Finally my favorite film character will definitely be Hermione from Harry Potter or Tracy Lord from The Philadelphia Story. Hermione is just a bad bitch and someone I looked up to. The Philadelphia Story is one of my favorite films of all time and Katherine Hepburn was hilarious in it. WHO IN YOUR LIFE INSPIRES YOU TO DO BETTER?This might be really corny but my little sister who is four years old makes me want to be a better person. You know, she’s fresh and getting started with her life and she hasn’t made any mistakes. I want to create an environment for her that I didn’t really have. In a way it’s like she’s my child. I love hanging out with her and yeah she’s a weak spot for me. She’s literally the greatest kid ever. SIX WHERE'S:WHERE DO YOU GO TO ESCAPE THE CITY?To escape New York City I would usually go to The Hamptons like most people. However, I guess you could still consider that NYC because so many of my friends go there so it’s not really an escape. I like to spend time in Connecticut. I learned the state from being in school and I love going to New Haven and Greenwich. It’s a very peaceful and quaint state, plus I just have an obsession with New England states—Maine and Rhode Island are close contenders. WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO THAT IS CONSIDERED A HIDDEN TREASURE IN THE CITY?There’s a place called Pete’s Tavern near Gramercy that is the oldest continuously ran restaurant/pub in the city. They have the absolute best burgers and it’s best to go on Thursday and Saturday. They also have Italian food which is a little random. Sometimes it’s a little sketch but most New York City locals are sketch. I also like Pomander Walk which is a small English village located in the Upper West Side. It’s super British with its architecture and it’s a really cute place. WHERE DO YOU LIVE?I live in a four bed, three and a half bath townhouse on the Upper East Side near Midtown East. My townhouse has three stores and it was where my grandfather lived before meeting my grandmother. It costs almost four million dollars but it’s a pretty nice place for a young business person like me. Naturally I had to get rid of all the old school furniture (it’s in storage) but now that I’ve fixed it up I really see myself starting a family here if I ever decide to stay in the city forever. WHERE IS YOUR FAMILY FROM?My mother’s family is originally from French-Morocco back when it was a French colony. My grandfather’s family moved here decades ago along with their wealth. He married my grandmother who is French (Black) and worked as a performer. Mother was born here along with her six sisters and brothers. Daddy comes from your everyday African-American family though who were brought to America from the Caribbeans. Personally I just prefer to tell people I’m African-American because African-American people have such distinct heritage. My lineage isn’t the same as the next Black person’s. WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL?I went to The Spence School from kindergarten to my senior year of high school. For college I went to the great Yale University and graduated with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies since Yale doesn’t have a formal PR or Communications degree. My interests consisted of English Grammar, Marketing, and Speech/Theatre. WHERE IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES WOULD YOU HAVE YOUR WEDDING & HONEYMOON?After watching Four Weddings on TLC I just knew that I wanted my wedding at Villa Vizcaya in Miami. It’s so beautiful and romantic and I just know that my wedding would be AMAZING if I had it there. As for my honeymoon…it has to be continental US so no Hawaii right? Hmm… I don’t know I’ve seen pictures and watched movies located in Northern California and I just think that geographically it’s much nicer than the California that is shoved in our faces. I’m not a huge beach girl so a beach vacation will not impress me. I’d rather go there and explore. FIVE DO'S/DOES:DO YOU HAVE A TYPE?Of course I have a type. The only thing is that I have multiple “types” that have to have a certain criteria. Like some people I know say they like strong-muscular dark skin black men and on the other hand they like tall-skinny light skin black men. My type if kind of hard to explain but the guys that I date or have dated look similar. I like James Bond kind of handsome and a dark way types of white guys with the dark features and good hair. I’ve never been into blonds or gingers or Asians (awk), and as for black men I usually like them dark chocolate. DOES THE FUTURE SCARE YOU?The future does scare me but my personal future doesn’t. I say that because I know that no matter what kind of lifestyle I live I will make the most out of it and find happiness even if I somehow become poor. However the future of the country and the world scares me. I’m the biggest drama queen when it comes to health, humanity, and emotions so any sign of conspiracy I’ll freak out. DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO NAME YOUR KIDS?I have a few ideas of what I’d like to name my kids but it ultimately depends on the father because I want their names to fit his culture just because I know that whoever I have children with will be of a different sort of background than my own. I know I want one child but lately I’ve been thinking about two…I don’t have a genger preference. A few girl names are Blair, Serafina Rose, Jade, Ava, Vera, or Ariana. For boys I’m thinking names like Mason, Joshua, Alexander, Scott, Zayn (LOL 1D!), or idk…I mostly just think of Mason haha. DO YOU EVER WISH YOU WERE SOMEONE ELSE?I used to wish that but that was when I was in high school. There were people who made me feel bad for being from a wealthy and well-off family. Now I’m just sort of playing things by ear. I know that I’m blessed and certain things are easier for me because of who my family is and the education I’ve received but I don’t necessarily want to change that or wish I was someone else. I have this life for a reason. DO YOU GET YOUR DECISIONS CRITICIZED OFTEN?I think everyone with a living breathing mother or other parental figure does. FOUR WHY'S:WHY ARE YOU FRIENDS WITH THE PEOPLE YOU'RE FRIENDS WITH?Most of my friends are people that I’ve been friends with since I was a little girl so there’s a history between us. In most cases our parents are friends, we went to the same type of prep schools and most of us either went to some nice college or the ones who didn’t stayed in the city living the life of young socialites and heirs. I also think that because I’m not your typical I guess “rich girl” and my father exposed me to many different backgrounds I’m better equipped to be friends with them. A lot of things they do are defense mechanisms and I’m friend enough to understand them but let them know when they’re wrong. WHY DO YOU THINK YOU'RE LIVING?Umm… well I do believe everyone is here for a reason but I don’t exactly know what mine is right now. I think that I’m meant to help people though. I don’t know what all I should do to help people but working in some sort of social service is what I feel like my calling is. WHY IS SOCIAL MEDIA NECESSARY TO YOU?Social media is a major component to our society. It’s kind of gotten to the point where you won’t receive “breaking news” if you don’t see it from a social media site. I use it mostly because of my job but also to stay up to date with things. Part of reason why so many older people are losing jobs in the business world is because they aren’t up to date on new technology and the ins and outs of social networking. I think that any smart business person or any job contender in general should at least have one social media account. It’s just the new way to communicate and show your personality so I find it weird when someone isn’t into it. WHY NEW YORK CITY?The energy, the sights, the sounds, the people, and the traditions. I’ve lived here my entire life and I’ve been to so many different places but there’s no place on earth like New York City. Every time I think about leaving or try to leave I somehow find myself back here. I could have left after college but when I think of “Land of Opportunity” I think that mostly applies to New York City. There’s something about how immigrants would see the Statue of Liberty as a welcome to our country. I love New York and even though I think it can be a trap for people it’s where I’m from and it’s comfortable. THREE IF'S:IF YOU COULD ONLY CHOOSE TWO OF THREE OPTIONS: LOVE, MONEY, & HEALTH, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?I’d definitely choose love and health. To me I think that people in love are the happiest people in the world and who doesn’t like feeling happy? If I’m healthy then chances are I’ll live a lot longer as well, plus I don’t like being sick and I’d rather not die from health related issues. Money is something that I’ve always had and from what I know it doesn’t bring happiness. Some of the wealthiest people are the most miserable. IF YOU WERE CURSED TO BE AN ANIMAL FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WHAT ANIMAL WOULD YOU BE?Well my favorite animals are flamingos but I’d probably be either a tiger or a lioness. Tigers are amazing and majestic creatures, I’ve always admired them. They’re big and vicious and they are a symbol of power. A lioness is kind of what I think women should aspire to be. They hold it down for their pride and their cubs—they’re essentially what makes or breaks a pride. Plus lions are the kings of the jungle so by me being a lioness that means I’ll be queen! IF YOUR BOYFRIEND WAS A SUPERNATURAL BEING WOULD YOU RATHER HIM BE A VAMPIRE OR A WEREWOLF?I’d rather my boyfriend be a werewolf for various reasons. Vampires are undead and I don’t know how I feel about someone who has been around for centuries. Not all vampires are Edward Cullen and virginal and the thought is just disgusting. Plus all vampires are creepy and lowkey stalkerish (not just Twilight vampires either). Werewolves just do it for me, plus Hollywood makes them really hot. I’d rather my boyfriend be like a werewolf from Teen Wolf—you know, still human looking just fangs, crazy eyes, claws, and a little bit more hair. Plus werewolves are practically normal humans so the whole “togetha 4 eternity” thing won’t be there and be all overwhelming. TWO WOULD YOU EVERS:WOULD YOU EVER SHAVE YOUR HEAD TO SAVE SOMEONE YOU LOVE?If shaving my head would save someone that I really love then of course I’ll do it. I would look cute with a shaved head too; I’d look a lot like a young Jada Pinkett Smith! If anyone doesn’t shave their head for someone they love or care about then that’s absolute crap to me, they should be burned at the stake for saying no. WOULD YOU EVER TRY A NON-HERBAL DRUG?Ehh, been there done that. What? In high school they were big into cocaine and ecstasy tablets and all kinds of things. For the most part my classmates used them for social purposes, no serious drug addiction except for the people on prescription drugs. Anyway, I did the X tablets and I had a really weird trip the last time I tried it. Then I didn’t deliberately try coke but I had something laced with it without me knowing and it made my lip numb and I hated it! ONE MEGAN A. BALTHAZAR: Mother was never one to miss a party and the summer of 1990 was in her mind “the year” to be in The Hamptons. Our family has a beach house in Southampton where my parents spent the last month of my mother’s pregnancy and I was born on June 1st, four days earlier than expected. My mom opted for a quieter and secluded birth to welcome me into the world but within a couple of months New York’s elite was beginning to arrive and the social events came in abundance (as usual for The Hamptons). She is a French-Moroccan heiress and socialite who spent most of her time planning and hosting society events—her main job was being an active member of my school’s PTA and a personal nag for me. Daddy made his claim to fame as a real estate tycoon who didn’t come from an old money family like my mother but he is probably the most ambitious person I know. He graduated from Princeton but went to Harvard for business school. He met my mother at a mutual friend’s party in New York City and at the time she was in her junior year at Brown. Long story short, their marriage didn’t necessarily last—my father received an offer from the Miami Heat to be a co-share and President of the franchise. At the time my mother and I didn’t really see why he’d take that offer—they sucked back then but he took it. Mom didn’t want to move to Miami and he took off, I was twelve when the divorce was final.
Mother and I stayed in Manhattan, we lived on the Upper East Side and my life was pretty cool just more structured than one would think. Most of my friends had these crazy socialite mothers who were always jet setting. My mother did that but one of the things she respected about my dad was that he worked very hard to get where he was and she expected the same from me. That meant going to Spence, an all-girls school for my entire life. I never had the problem of feeling ignored but I did feel as if my parents didn’t listen as well as they could have. My summers were spent in foreign countries; spring break was spent in Miami with my father, on Thanksgiving I went to Maryland to visit paternal grandparents, and Christmas and New Years I stayed in New York City where my dad would visit for a week. As stated I had a good life there. I just never really fit in. I don’t mean I didn’t fit in in a social way, because I did. I just mean that everyone seemed to be so content and so happy with the fact that we had money—almost like they were lost in material possessions. Everything I did was almost as if it was an issue and my mother poked and prodded with everything. I remember when I wanted to give up playing piano to take ballet classes and she “encouraged” me to not chase a dream with ballet.
My escape was Yale…even though I really didn’t want to go there. Like most parents mine had Ivy League expectations. It was nothing that I couldn’t do, my high school classes were a cake walk and whatever wasn’t a cake walk became one after parent teacher conferences. I spent consecutive semesters there; I didn’t take breaks for winter, maymester, or summer school. The summer after my freshman year I changed to Interdisciplinary Studies from a Business/Pre-Law major. My only interest was fashion but I had no hopes to design, I didn’t want to do merchandising, I wasn’t interested in photography or the magazine industry. I knew I wanted to produce and work in Fashion public relations. Yale isn’t known to be this fashion-forward school; it’s full of preps or people so nerdy and badly dressed that it made me cringe. Still, I did what I could with my resources. Soon my breaks overseas were replaced with literally skewering the city to find internships. The most notable were CHANEL, Balmain, Alexander Wang, and CFDA which were all really great internships. All four years I tried to get an internship with KCD which represents all of the labels I listed as well as Alexander McQueen, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, and many many more! Needless to say I got denied numerous times but I didn’t want to work anywhere else. So when I graduated I somehow knew they were getting rid of someone, it was like an instinct and I went in there without wearing business clothes or a resume and just talked to them.
I got the job but I started out as an assistant. I thought that as an assistant I will be able to work at fashion shows, travel, and actually assist with things pertaining to their job. I started with assistant’s pay and everything. One of the things I find refreshing in the industry is that it is kind of about who you know and you kind of need to have some sort of financial support in order to live in a place like New York and make literally nothing but they were really hard on me because I come from Manhattan and come from a good family. A lot of my progressing came from coming in early, leaving late, taking a chance (and sometimes going overboard) to joke with my bosses, and just by studying a lot more. You’ll be amazed with how much you don’t know about fashion when you’re working in a Fashion public relations firm, especially one like KCD. Now I’m a PR Executive who works the closest with Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs making a much better salary, and I get to do really cool things in the industry but if I knew what I knew now about how hard PR is I would definitely rethink this as a career! As a PR professional you’re kind of a therapist to your clients, you have to be a litigator, you have to have amazing judgment, and you have to be able to assert yourself. I learned a lot from this but my mother HATES my job, as I predicted.
