I told you before I don't sleep with anyone I don't love, you should have seen this coming, she had said.
And yet, Jamie Bardem didn't. Those written words were enough to catch the poor linebacker off guard, that he literally fell out of his chair. And when he resurfaced, left eye burning from stupidly poking himself on the way back up, it was still there, written in truth on the screen. And as the conversation between them continued on through out the afternoon and into the evening, she didn't go back and deny. She didn't even seem worried that he hadn't said it back to her. Then again, you can only tell so much from a computer screen. Still, the smile that developed on his face the moment she confirmed it never left the whole time. It was sudden, the admittance, but after Jamie fearing that he had just unintentionally but possibly ruined their relationship in the past couple of weeks that she had been with him in Dallas, she had seemed to mend it all in one with just those three simple words.
There were always stories about the downfalls of falling in love too quickly, but Jamie felt like this was something he had waited years to hear. Back in college, even when they were both acting stupid and childish, and he in his strict bachelor phase, he knew apart of him deep down secretly wanted her to say it to him, and not to Ben. Oh, Switzerland, how Jamie wished he could see him now. Of all the years Jamie suffered knowing he was second, he was now first and only. And it was probably the greatest feeling he had ever felt in his life. And despite all the complications early love could bring, Jamie didn't care right now. All he knew was that he needed to get to her. He needed to get to her and stare into those big beautiful eyes and tell her too.
The moment he had signed off, he was back on the internet and buying a last minute flight to Los Angeles. He then quickly called Willa Morrison's mother, cringing and wanting to get off the line once her old smoke ridden sultry voice came on the line, but dealt with her long enough to confirm a sleepover for Mira and that he'd be back to pick her up the following night or early Wednesday afternoon. On the plane he went over and over in his head, how he was going to surprise and tell her, knowing his way with words when it came to romance were so inexplicably bad, that he often took the pathetic route and looked at guide books in his panic moments. Expressing himself any other way was never a problem for Jamie, as his loud mouth often went off even when he didn't think first. But when it came to romance, he feared and internally fought too much. But perhaps because she had said it first, this would make it easier for him. But once he set foot off the plane and jumped into a taxi, and glancing at his watch, knowing she'd be at the stables this early in the morning, fear set back in and he wondered if doing this would be romantic or just really stupid. She had to know how he felt already right? Wasn't it obvious? But then he kept hearing his sister's voice, telling him that's where all men go wrong, assuming the woman knows too much. You always need to tell her, she said. And despite the fact that Ana insisted that maybe they still needed space at the moment, Jamie sat back in his seat, ready to go through with this regardless.
Once he reached the stables, he asked one of the girls wandering the grounds if she knew where Ana was. The girl giggled and pointed near the stalls, and Jamie nodded and flashed a small smile of thanks her way, before making his way toward it. He noticed Ana talking to another young girl who was high up on a horse, and he stood back for a moment and watched as she used her hands to explain something. Once the young raven haired girl noticed him though, he walked a little closer. And then when Ana turned, the shock so perfect on her face that he couldn't help but grin, he said, "You didn't think you could say what you did last night and that be that, did you blondie?"

her time in dallas had been at the forefont of ana's mind since she touched down at LAX. she couldn't wipe the smile off her face, remembering the kiss jamie had left her with in the departure lounge or the letter mira had written her telling her she loved her and wanted her to come visit. she was almost surprised at how suddenly she had fit into their little family, how well she had blended into them and how well it had suited her. she had adored mira since college, always having a soft spot for the little girl before her father had been able to fully handle his responsibility to her. jamie wasn't perfect, but she was proud of how far he had come and everything he had done for the little girl, and for himself. he wasn't an arrogant college kid anymore. he had a career most people would envy, beautiful homes, a bright and clever daughter and most of all, he had learnt a little humility. not a lot, granted, but some. ana hadn't been this happy in years, letting herself get lost in the relationship that had been brewing since college.
that didn't make it easy though. as much as she loved every moment spent in dallas and she adored mira and jamie there was a niggling feeling that their perfect little family was feeling so comfortable and it was all happening too fast. it a huge step going from single to not only throwing yourself into a long term relationship but gaining an 8 year old in the process. she had been lucky to not grow up in a broken home, but she had the feeling that any woman coming into a little girl's life had to be careful not to step on any toes and ana was certain she didn't want to do that. she didn't want to impose herself on any memories mira had of her mother or any relationship she had with her father. they had known each other a long time, the little girl had known her for almost as long as she knew her own father but there was a difference between being her friend and being jamie's girlfriend. there were so many unspoken rules she didn't know, so many things to take into account that sometimes that perfect little family made her nervous. at the idea of people judging her, of people thinking she was selfishly trying to fill a whole in their life, and if she was honest, she wanted to do just that. she wanted to erase the pain of mira's mother dying and jamie's selfish past when it came to that sweet little girl. she wanted to make them a proper family.
she had been of two minds about it since she had come back from dallas, no longer under the spell of jamie's charm and their family routine. so she had thrown herself into the stables again, getting her girls back into their routine after their initial weeks of college debauchery. only a few years before she had been just like them and she had no doubt that in a few more years these girls would be in her position, surpassing ana in talent and abilities, she'd gotten to the stables early that morning, knowing that she too needed a good workout with her horses after leaving them in their stables for too long. it was amazing the difference she felt in her limbs and muscles after a hard workout in the arena, she pushed them both, probably more then she needed to on her first day back but she wanted to feel bandit bend beneath her and that accomplished feeling of having him respond to the slightest shift of weight or the tiniest pressure to the reins. the warmblood was well trained and experienced and after they were both in a lather of sweat they retired and it was time to turn her attentions to the girls.
soigne was young and talented, a freshman at USC and a showjumping protege. except her horse was green and as stubborn as her so their clashes in the ring last year had led to more disasters then ribbons. but a top one of ana's olympic standard mares she was a blue ribbon winner every time. jacque on the other hand wasn't nearly as diligent and could be easily distracted by college, she was a brilliant rider though and despite her bad track record she reminded ana a lot of herself in college and she had a soft spot for the girl. focusing on the girls had to be a priority though, and not jamie and mira, she had the college competitions starting soon and they had already taken too much time off. soigne sat high on the chestnut gelding as he pranced in place, the thoroughbred eager to get going and ana waited patiently until she had settled the horse and taught him a lesson in manners before she continued with their lesson plan for the day. the thoroughbred was high strung and she was reining him in too much before the jumps, not trusting the horses own natural talent to get him around. the fight was causing him to jump to late, cat leaping his way through the course instead of the easy flow that should have taken place. halfway through my points though, soigne's attention turned away and ana frowned as her student looked over her head as ana was trying to speak to her. i turned in a huff, fully expecting jacque to be behind me trying to mime a conversation to soigne behind my back, but to my surprise there stood jamie. my jaw dropped and i couldn't help the shock that washed over me. hours ago i had talked to only having just left him in dallas and all of a sudden he was here, at my stables. he grinned and teased her in that sweetly arrogant way and ana merely frowned but laughed, somewhere still between shock and confusion. "what? what you mean? why are you even here, you maniac?!" she couldn't help but laugh, this was a typical jamie stunt.
